Confession time: I’m obsessed with the fall season (-ber months, too), so this southern-style dessert is one of my favorites.
I can’t imagine my life without apples, cinnamon, and pumpkin. This apple dessert is so cozy, and I can imagine myself as a granny cake to bake this one for my grandchildren in the future. Fantastic like the cobbler is for the summer, you can bake one with peach, blueberry, strawberry… with everything you want! It’s really an excellent dessert to know because it is very versatile and easy to make.
Now, a bit of cobbler history (I love researching recipe origins; it’s essential.)
Cobblers take root in the British American colonies. People settlers could not make traditional suet puddings due to a lack of suitable ingredients and equipment, so instead covered a stewed filling with a layer of uncooked plain biscuit, scone batter, or dumplings. The origin of the name ” cobbler,” recorded in 1859, is uncertain.

Apple Cobbler Old Fashioned Way

- 9×13 iron pan
Ingredients
- 6 medium apple, peeled an cut
- 1 cup water or apple juice (better with apple juice)
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp vanilla (I add 1 tsp)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp salt
For the batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 5 tbsp melted butter
- ground cinnamon for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350℉ (175℃) and add a piece of butter into a 9×13 inch pan; let your pan into the oven while it preheats.
- Mix Brown sugar, water, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a saucepan. Add the apples and cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared pan.
- Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add the milk and melted butter and stir until it is combined.
- Pour the mixture over the apples in the pan.
- Bake for about 38-42 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. You can serve with vanilla ice cream if you'd like.
